Bellaire was founded in 1908 by William Wright Baldwin, who was the vice president of the Burlington Railroad. Baldwin stated that the town was named "Bellaire", or "Good Air" for its breezes.[5] At this time, Six miles of prairie were between Houston and Bellaire. In 1918, with a population of population of 200, Bellaire was officially incorporated. Because of this incorporation, Houston was not able to annex this area.  Bellaire's population reached 1,124 in 1940, however, in the post-World War II building boom, Bellaire experienced a rapid population explosion.
