Conroe is named after Isaac Conroe. Born in the North, he served as a Union Cavalry officer and settled in Houston after the Civil War.  During the 1930s, because of oil profits, the city briefly boasted more millionaires per capita than any other U.S. city. After the construction of Interstate 45 in the postwar period, improved automobile access allowed many Houstonians to begin to follow the highway to new suburban communities that developed around Conroe.  (Source: Wikipedia) Today, Conroe continues to grow. Among many things, because of its close proximity to Lake Conroe (22,000 acres), Sam Houston National Forest, and W. Goodrich Jones State Forest, Conroe is a haven for the outdoor lover; and, Conroe has a bustling downtown with breweries, theatres, and plenty of shopping. There is also plenty of live music, which has earned Conroe the designation of Music Friendly Community by the state of Texas. (Source: visitconroe.com)
