Fourth Ward was originally established as one of four wards by the City of Houston in 1839.[1] By 1906 it included much of what is today. Fourth Ward was originally established as one of four wards by the City of Houston in 1839.[1]  After the Civil War ended, the heart of this community was Freedman’s Town, a settlement of freed African Americans. For many years, Fourth Ward was a major commercial and cultural center for Houston’s widely scattered African-American community. By the 1920s and 1930s, the population density of Freedmen's Town was almost six times that of the average of the entire City of Houston.[3] After the construction of Interstate 45 cut off the eastern edge of the community, that portion was redeveloped as the Allen Center office, hotel, and retail center. (Sources: City of Houston website and Wikipedia) For decades now, in part because of its close location to Downtown, Fourth Ward has been experiencing and continues to have massive gentrification.
