Greater Greenspoint originally began with the development of subdivisions for Houstonians seeking moderately priced homes close to the North 45 Freeway. The opening of Intercontinental Airport in 1969 transformed the intersection of 1-45 and Beltway 8 into a commercial crossroads. During the 1970s, an initial 2,000-acre (8.1 km2) retail and office development centered around Greenspoint Mall. Today, Greenspoint is one of Houston's major business districts, with 10.82 million square feet (1.005 million square meters) of office space.[4] The district's 2,880 companies host a workforce of nearly 50,000 people.[5][6][7][4] The area is a classic example of a planned edge city.[2] (Sources: City of Houston website and Wikipedia)
