Hedwig Village was largely settled by German immigrants in the 1800s. Generally, they were farmers who raised livestock; however, because the area was also heavily wooded, there were also sawmills and lumberyards. Today, some of the streets like Bauer, Witte, Sauer, Hedwig, Reidel, are named after these original settlers. Up until the mid to late 30s, many people got around by horseback due to the lack of paved roads. In the early 1950s, a group of citizens in the area became concerned about the lack of zoning and possible annexation by Houston. In response to these concerns, there was an election held on December 18, 1954, with a total of 74 votes cast; 57 were for Incorporation, and 17 were against it. Hedwig Village was incorporated on December 23, 1954. When incorporated, Hedwig Village received its name from Hedwig Vankowski. In 1906, her family came to Houston from Germany when she was 19 years old. She married Henry Schroeder, who was the son of Jacob Schroeder, who was one of the original settlers. Later, Hedwig donated the land for Hedwig Road, and Hedwig Park received her name. (Source: Wikipedia)
