Katy was originally the hunting ground of the Karankawa Indian tribes, the winter feeding grounds of great herds of buffalo and large flocks of wild ducks, geese, sandhill and whooping cranes, and numerous other game birds, and home to longhorn cattle, deer and wolves. Later, the first Anglo settlement was in 1872. In the years that followed, rice farming became important, along with growing peanuts and cotton. Later, Katy became a small railroad town. In 1934, a gas field was discovered. The City of Katy was formally incorporated in 1945. (Source: City of Katy website) Today, although downtown Katy continues to offer residents the charm of a small town, beginning in the 1960s, as the rapid growth of Houston moved westward along the I-10 corridor, Katy became heavily urbanized. [7] Today, the City is unique in that it sits within three counties – Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller. (Source: Wikipedia) However, with the convenient Freeway access of the I-10 running east to Downtown, and, State Highway 99 (SH 99), aka the Grand Parkway, that runs north and south, Katy continues to have ongoing massive residential and commercial developments.
