Tanglewood was developed by William Giddings Farrington. He opened it to the public in 1949. The Farrington family took the name Tanglewood from "Tanglewood Tales" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The book was a favorite of Farrington's daughter, Mary Catherine Farrington. For the first six months, no houses sold in Tanglewood. Mary Catherine, who later took the family name of Miller, said that the lack of sales caused stress for the family. After several heavy rainstorms resulted in floods that affected other areas in Harris County, potential buyers began inquiring about buying houses in Tanglewood because they heard that the neighborhood had high water drainage capabilities. Today, many of the older homes are "Rambling Ranch" style homes. However, newer homes of various styles, including English Tudor and Mediterranean stucco homes with tile roofs, are increasingly replacing older homes. Tanglewood is managed through the Tanglewood Homes Association (THA). They believe that the enforcement of deed restrictions is one of their most critical functions; Through these efforts, Tanglewood has over 5,000 trees populating the neighborhood, resulting in a lush green feel.
