Dickinson is named after John Dickinson, who purchased a local tract of land from Stephen F. Austin’s colony in 1824. Following the Civil War, the Galveston, Houston, and Henderson Railroad was built to connect the large cities of Galveston and Houston. This provided an opportunity for growth in Dickinson. After the 1900 Galveston Hurricane devastated the area, land became cheap in Dickinson and many new farmers settled in the area. What had been a cotton or cane growing area, became dominated by farms growing fruit and various vegetables for market. After WWII, industrialization and the growth of the oil industry in the Houston and Galveston area contributed to Dickinson's growth. More growth came with NASA's establishment in 1962 of the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center just north of Dickinson in the Clear Lake area. In order to avoid annexation by League City and Texas City, the residents incorporated the City of Dickinson in 1977. (Sources: City of Dickinson website and Galveston County website)
