Harrisburg - Manchester area development predates Houston. Before the Texas Revolution, Harrisburg was a community located at the confluence of Brays Bayou and Buffalo Bayou and was founded by John Richardson Harris, a New Yorker, who erected a trading post in the area. Later, A town site, the City of Harrisburg, was laid out to accommodate a growing population. During the Texas Revolution, the town became the temporary capital of Texas when government officials headquartered there as they were fleeing from Santa Ana's forces, and was subsequently burned down by Santa Anna's army on their way to defeat at the Battle of San Jacinto. Later that year, Houston, which was established upstream of the devastated community, quickly overtook and eclipsed Harrisburg. When the Southern Pacific Railroad system moved its shops to Houston in 1870, Harrisburg became less prominent; and, In 1926, was annexed by the City of Houston.
